CHAPTER THIRTEEN

NOVA

I crouched over the toilet, vomiting bile until I was only dry heaving. Nausea had been my worst enemy lately, and I cursed myself that I didn’t think to take anti-nausea meds before we left. The bathroom door opened and heels clicked against the tile floor as someone entered further. I waited to make sure I was finished before I stood upright and grabbed some toilet paper, wiping my mouth before throwing it into the toilet.

“I know you’re hiding in there,” a voice said.

I froze, unsure of how to respond. After a few moments I flushed the toilet and stepped out of the stall to see Silas’s disapproving mother standing near the row of sinks, a permanent frown etched onto her face. I gave her a small smile and moved over to the sink to wash my hands. My anxiety grew slowly as I felt her cold stare on me. I wasn’t sure what her fucking problem was, but I’d be lying if I said her “victim” freaked me out further about my situation with Silas.

When she didn’t say anything, I finally turned to her and gave her a polite smile. “I wasn’t hiding. I just felt a little sick, that’s all.”

Her hard gaze scanned along my body before she frowned at me. “I pray you’re not having his baby,” she scoffed.

If this were a normal situation, I’d think that she would’ve been testing me to see if I were good for her son. But Silas wasn’t a normal man and I was sure his mother wasn’t normal either. I shifted nervously in front of her. My gut told me that this might’ve been some kind of fucked up test that Silas was putting me through in order to test my loyalty. I wouldn’t put it past him if it were. So I forced a small smile on my lips and put on my best performance.

“Silas and I planned my pregnancy if that’s what you’re asking,” I said. “We’re both really excited about this.”

She scoffed, which made my smile falter. “My son wouldn’t plan to have a child with a woman that he clearly has only been dating for a month or two,” she said. “He hardly even keeps women around long enough to want to make those kind of long-term decisions.”

I wish you were actually right about that, I thought to myself but I shrugged instead.

“No offense to his previous women, I’m not like them.”

“You’re stupid enough to think you’re different,” she muttered. “The only thing you’ll be is a single mother to a billionaire’s baby that he’ll probably disown once it’s born and he realizes the responsibilities. What do you think happened to his so-called ex-fiancée when he was done with her?”

Her words made me nervous. I knew the story that Silas had told me when I’d asked him about her, but his mother made it seem as if there was more to the story.

“She left Silas because she couldn’t handle the spotlight that came with being with him,” I reiterated with a shrug.
